Early detection camps
Late diagnosis is the single largest cause of permanent disability in leprosy. We run camps in colonies, brick kilns, migrant settlements and villages where no health worker has been in years.
- Skin and nerve screening for every adult and child present
- On-the-spot referral and enrolment into MDT
- Follow-up visits by the same field worker who found the case
- About ₹18,000 per camp, typically finding 4–6 undiagnosed cases
Treatment support and wound care
MDT itself is free from the government. What is not free is getting a patient to complete twelve months of it, and keeping their ulcers from becoming amputations in the meantime.
- Daily dressing clinic at the centre and weekly in the field
- MCR protective footwear, custom-fitted and replaced yearly
- Self-care training — inspecting hands and feet by eye, every night
- Nutrition support for patients too weak to tolerate the drugs
Reconstructive surgery and physiotherapy
Claw hand, foot drop and lagophthalmos are correctable. Restoring the use of a hand is not cosmetic — it is the difference between earning and begging.
- Tendon transfer for claw hand and foot drop
- Eyelid surgery to prevent blindness from lagophthalmos
- Pre- and post-operative physiotherapy, six to twelve weeks
- Splints and assistive devices made in-house
Livelihood and dignity
A cured patient with no income returns to the same street. We fund the small, unglamorous things that restart a working life.
- Tailoring and handicraft units run by cured patients
- Small-shop and cart grants with no repayment expected
- Ration support for families through the treatment period
- Documentation help — Aadhaar, ration card, disability certificate
Children of the colony
The children of leprosy-affected parents are healthy. They are excluded anyway. Education is the only thing that reliably breaks the inheritance.
- School fees, uniforms, books and transport
- After-school tuition at the centre
- Hostel support for children whose home situation is unsafe
- ₹10,000 covers one child for a full academic year
